9.47pm So India draw first blood in this series. There’s an obvious mismatch in terms of personnel, especially in the batting department (today’s starting XI for India had seven players in the top eight who have more than 1000 ODI runs, a figure only Aaron Finch and Glenn Maxwell had on the Australian side) but the bowling from Australia should make them competitive over the course of this series. Look forward to your company for the second ODI in three days’ time.

Stick around, because Shashank Kishore’s report will drop by shortly.

For the moment, this is Debayan Sen bidding adieu on behalf of Alex Malcolm and Binoy George. Follow the game with ESPNcricinfo!

Presentation time

Kedar Jadhav is the player of the match. Says: “(on the wicket) My bowling is all about reading what the batsman is trying to do. The idea is to bowl stump-to-stump. The best part about my bowler is that I don’t think like a bowler. I just enjoy my bowling. (On his innings) Recently in Australia, we put up a similar kind of chase. When you have Mahibhai at the other end, you don’t have to worry about a lot. I get to learn a lot from him. Nobody better than him in the middle to learn the game from. We are looking forward to every game, and we learn from our captain that we need to keep our intensity up. I guess I have tried to play more shots, but plenty of times he tells you that the team needs me to be more solid.”

Aaron Finch: “We were about 20 or 30 short. Especially after we lost one wicket, we had to take it deeper. But our bowlers did well, continued taking wickets, and they were really good. If you have a guy go on and get 80, and that’s what you are trying to do. Just a bit more attention to detail. We tried our best with the ball. I think our quicks are most effective when they are banging the wicket. There were a few plays-and-misses, but that happens against a high-quality side.”

Virat Kohli: “It was a difficult game. I thought we did really well with the ball. The wicket didn’t offer as much as it did under the lights. Their partnership was outstandin. I think the bowling (won the game for us) although we wanted to get a partnership going. The way Kedar and MS took responsibility was outstanding. (On Jadeja) Amazing. 10 overs for less than 35 runs. Just the tight lines he bowled and set the fields accordingly. He’s a great asset in the field too. (On Kuldeep and Shami) Brilliant, the way Shami has come into the white-ball set up. Never seen him so lean before. Got Maxi (Maxwell) out on 40-odd with a beautiful wicket. Just looking good for the World Cup.”

Mohammad Shami tells Sanjay Manjrekar: “This year has been one where we have worked really hard. We enjoy our training and you get to the see the results on the field. I hope that we continue to enjoy playing together and performing for the country. (On consistency across spells) There have been ups and downs in life, but it is cricket that has brought me here. I just try to give my best for the team, and I keep taking feedback from the experienced players. I have focused more on my line and length in the last 18 months. (On fitness) When I returned from injuries, I had gone up to 93kg, and then I realised I needed to lose weight. I thank every one who pushes me, and I have maintained my weight since then.”

9.25pm India go 1-0 up in this series, but it was not for want of effort from the Australians. Australia gritted and fought away in the face of some superb Indian bowling to first post 236, but it was always going to be just about 20-25 runs short on a slow surface with variable bounce. They still did well to drag India back from 80 for 1 to have them reeling at one stage on 99 for 4. But Dhoni and Jadhav batted the situation astutely. Kept the runs coming, and never let the run-rate go alarmingly high. Fitting that they stayed together to see India over the line, with Dhoni getting the winning hit

48.24 Stoinis to Dhoni lofts this over the infield. And that’s that…with Jadhav and Dhoni both batting magnificently to take India home after a wobble in their chase! FOUR
48.14 Stoinis to Dhoni short ball, and he short-arm jabs it beyond point. Super timing on that shot! FOUR

Has to be Stoinis

Srizan Gangol: “Don’t know why people are comparing Jadhav Vs Dhoni, they are simply doing their job, Dhoni is making sure that they do not lose any wicket and Jadhav is keeping up with the run rate. ”

End of Over No.48 India 232/4 Last Over (11 runs)

47.66 Coulter-Nile to Jadhav length ball, and he has eased into this…and lofted it beyond midwicket. What a shot! SIX

Vishal : “Hi, This is Vishal from Malaysia, Imdia will win this one and the next four….. and the world cup. ”

47.52 Coulter-Nile to Jadhav full ball, and he flicks it towards short midwicket. Misfield allows them to come back for two 2 runs
47.41 Coulter-Nile to Dhoni slower ball, outside off, and he fetches this from there and pulls it towards backward square leg 1 run

bobby: “this is bobby from los angeles. no matter what they do india will lose critical match in world cup and hence miss out wc. note this and lets watch wc ”

47.30 Coulter-Nile to Dhoni full, and he drives this hard, but straight towards mid off no run

Clifford: “I am Clifford from Australia. Drop Finch and play Short we can win next four for sure. ” — Cannot disagree. The captain is a walking wicket, sadly

47.21 Coulter-Nile to Jadhav length ball, and he walks across the stumps and nurdles the ball down towards long leg 1 run
47.11 Coulter-Nile to Dhoni length ball, and he drives it straight to mid on, and takes off. Makes the crease at the other end to a rapturous applause. FIFTY for Mahendra Singh Dhoni! 1 run

Should see Coulter-Nile now coming back to bowl out. Australia need a magic over. Perhaps blasting both these set batsmen out

End of Over No.47 India 221/4 Last Over (5 runs)

Santosh Battula: “In 2011, Dhoni scored continuously 3 half centuries against England in England and immediately followed it by another 50 against England in Hyderabad. Looks like the script might repeat this time against Australia.”

46.60 Cummins to Jadhav length ball, and he defends from the crease no run
46.61 Cummins to Jadhav short, but he will have to re-bowl this. Starts from middle and leg, and then goes further down the leg side, and Carey has to collect 1 wide
46.51 Cummins to Dhoni short ball, into his body at 131kph, and he pulls it down towards long leg 1 run
46.41 Cummins to Jadhav slower ball, and he goes back and flicks it with the angle into his body and nurdles it down towards long leg 1 run

Sam Birdman: “Hello , this is Sam Birdman from Australia..we will lose this one but will win all of the rest of matches on this tour.” — Duly noted 🙂

46.31 Cummins to Dhoni straighter ball, and he walks across his crease and drops it down towards long leg 1 run

Mileend: “Jadhav can be answer to number 4, he absorbs pressure easily and plays smart, the century in Pune was amazing where he eclipsed Kohli.”

46.21 Cummins to Jadhav fuller, and he plays it with the incoming angle towards long leg 1 run
46.10 Cummins to Jadhav length, outside off, and he plays it with a dead bat no run

Mayank: “Now the irony would be kedar jadhav receiving man of the match whereas it was MS who did the hard work”

Mahesh: “Everyone talking about dhoni innings as finisher….But Jadhav playing better than dhoni as finisher”

End of Over No.46 India 216/4 Last Over (7 runs)

Critical boundary in that over, and also means the threat of Zampa has been negotiated pretty well. Two crucial wickets, but 49 conceded off his 10

45.61 Zampa to Jadhav fuller ball, and he dunks it down the wicket towards long on 1 run
45.50 Zampa to Jadhav comes down the wicket to flick a length ball, gets rapped on the pads, but it went off the inside edge no run
45.40 Zampa to Jadhav turn from outside off, and he defends it from the crease no run
45.30 Zampa to Jadhav presses forward to defend a length ball on off stump, turning further away no run

Mustafa Moudi: “This match is exact replica of their last ODI against each other in Australia. Australia defending 230s and Dhoni-Jadhav Partnership takes India home !!”

45.24 Zampa to Jadhav tossed up, and he launches into a cover drive. Inside out, lofting it over the infielders. Terrific stuff! FOUR
45.12 Zampa to Jadhav he goes back and pushes a length ball towards deep midwicket. A misfield allows them to come back for two. That is very un-Australian! 2 runs

Zampa to bowl out now. Four in-fielders on the off side

28 to win from 30. Australia scored 40 off the last five, incidentally

End of Over No.45 India 209/4 Last Over (9 runs)

44.61 Stoinis to Jadhav length, angles into him, and he pushes it down to long on 1 run
44.54 Stoinis to Jadhav short ball, and he has fetched this all the way to backward square leg. Well played, because he had to keep this to the left of long leg, and did it perfectly! FOUR
44.41 Stoinis to Dhoni length, outside off, and he looks to go down the wicket, but gets the outside edge! It flies down to third man, on the first bounce, though 1 run

Sadi: “Poor bowling from Cummins. Jadhav is comfortable against the short ball and Cummins still going for short.”

44.31 Stoinis to Jadhav slower ball, off-cutter, and he walks across the ball and flicks it down towards long leg 1 run
44.21 Stoinis to Dhoni fuller ball, towards leg, and he flicks it down to long leg. He hobbles on his way to the other side 1 run

If Dhoni is feeling the pinch of his calf, could he take some liberties with the bowling here?

44.11 Stoinis to Jadhav short ball, and he rides the bounce to play it down to long leg. They walk this single 1 run

Miles : “Yes , MSD I hear you but I got to do it my way says Jadhav. I just gotta do it.” — Sinatra fan, perhaps?

End of Over No.44 India 200/4 Last Over (6 runs)

43.60 Cummins to Dhoni short, fast (142kph) and he hops on to the back foot to defend no run
43.50 Cummins to Dhoni length ball, outside off, takes the pace off it at just 121kph, and he cuts it towards point no run

Venkat Prakash: “The 00’s ..Sachin is out after a scintillating 81..61 required of 10 overs ..Azhar runs in himself out mindlessly..ajay jades and robin Singh fighting it out with some terrific running between the wickets…don’t want to quote the end..as srinath the last man out..” — Ah, the heady days 🙂

43.41 Cummins to Jadhav length ball, and he eases it through covers 1 run
