End of Over No.20 Sri Lanka 164/9 Last Over (15 runs)

Right that does it for us folks. Join us soon, because the cricket doesn’t stop. IPL’s starting in a few hours, and the third T20I of this series is yet to come too. This is Saurabh, signing off on behalf of Hemant and Thilak.

Lasith Malinga: “I think our bowling did well, but two-three overs they got big runs. But still it was such a good wicket, 170-175 was a gettable target. We gave 10 runs extra. But still when someone like Isuru is there, you never know. Very frustrating for myself and the support staff (the top order failure). The top order batsmen have to take the responsibility, that’s what the team is expecting. They have to learn that. Udana is the kind of player we need. He realised what responsibility he has and showed his character. We are looking forward to him doing well in the future also. I didn’t try to get wickets, I just tried to stick to my basics. If you minimise the boundaries and scoring shots, you will get results. I don’t think I can go on much more. After the World Cup, my cricketing career is ending. I want to play T20 World Cup, and then end my career.”

The man of the match is Rassie van der Dussen. “Reeza played brilliantly. We played a lot of our cricket together so we understand each other well. We complement each others’ strengths. He scores in different areas than I do, so for a bowler it’s always tough. Very satisfied with the summer, making my debut was a dream come true. Trying to take it a game at a time and be my best every ball. I’ve worked very hard, so I want to take all opportunities.”

JP Duminy: “Certainly satisfying. Always good to get a series win under the belt. Yes there are a few areas we can brush up on, but all in all a good performance tonight. In T20 cricket, partnerships are under-valued and that 100-run partnership set up the game for us. That first over (by Steyn) was quality. He’s a match winner and he’s always going to give you something in the PowerPlay. And to follow it with Chris Morris, we got four-five wickets up front. Great innings by Isuru Udana. Always nice to play in the Highveld, we’re looking to end the series on a high.”

9.35 pm If Udana had some support… that is going to be the refrain in Sri Lanka. He’s already shown earlier on this tour that he can really wallop the ball, but this was his best exhibition of hitting yet. Really gave the ball an almighty biff, but it was not just mindless hitting. He was picking his spots and his balls to hit, and he backed himself to bring off the shots he wanted to. Showed a great eye and equally great power. South Africa would have been nervous at one point, after looking to have the game sewn up. This has been a pretty poor limited-overs leg for Sri Lanka, but in Udana, they’ve discovered a gem.

19.6 1 Sipamla to Udana anti-climatic end perhaps, with a full ball swiped to long-on for a single. Udana ends on an incredible 84* off 48, easily the innings of the day. He should be Man of the Match if nothing else. What devastating hitting. But Sri Lanka lose by 16 runs and South Africa have thus won the T20I series, taking a 2-0 lead 1 run
19.5 6 Sipamla to Udana and he’s going out in style. Sri Lanka may not be winning this, but Udana is making some statement. Short ball outside off and he pulls it from outside off to beyond the square leg boundary. Got it not exactly off the meat of the bat, but hit so powerfully that it travels over the fence just the same SIX
19.4 0 Sipamla to Udana caught on the bounce at deep midwicket. Reeza Hendricks dives forward, but says it dropped short, and it did. no run
19.3 2 Sipamla to Udana dragged this to deep square leg from well outside off, and there is confusion in the running between the wickets, and sloppiness in trying to run the batsmen out. The throw came to the bowler’s end with the batsman well out of his crease having hesitated for the second, but Sipamala made a mess of collecting it. He hares after it and throws it to the keeper, but Udana dives to make his crease 2 runs
19.2 0 Sipamla to Udana oh that’s done it. Full on off, and driven powerfully, but straight to cover. Sri Lanka need a no-ball six now to win no run
19.1 6 Sipamla to Udana six first ball! full on a fifth stump line, he gets down on one knee and swings through the line. Sends it over long-off! Game on, game very much still on SIX

Udana needs to hit 32 runs off this over to win it. Unlikely. But given what we’ve seen so far, you wouldn’t call it impossible… Sipamla to bowl

End of Over No.19 Sri Lanka 149/9 Last Over (16 runs)

18.6 W Morris to Malinga you miss I hit it’s Morris’s turn to say, though to Malinga. Full fast and straight, Malinga was backing away, doesn’t connect. The ball finds timbre. OUT
SL Malinga b Morris 8 (9m 4b 2×4 0x6) SR: 200.00
18.5 4 Morris to Malinga he’s slashed that past point he backed away and just threw his bat at it, gets a thick edge that runs between point and short third man for four FOUR
18.4 1 Morris to Udana driven powerfully again, but not as straight and long-on collects on the bounce 1 run
18.3 6 Morris to Udana bang this is sublime striking. Morris goes full again and Udana opts to go straight back over his head. ANd hits with such power and timing that it crashes into the sight screen without even a full follow through. Amazing SIX
18.3 1 Morris to Udana he responds with a pacy bouncer, but it’s gone too high and it’ll be a wide. Bounced over his head 1 wide
18.2 4 Morris to Udana you miss, I hit Morris misses the yorker by a few centimetres, and it’s enough for Udana. Again clearing his front leg and striking it from middle and off to crash it through extra cover FOUR
18.1 0 Morris to Udana yorker length on middle stump, driven by going back and clearing his front leg, but straight to cover no run

there have been a rash of injuries to fast bowlers in the IPL. Are any franchises watching Isuru Udana? Can bowl, can tonk – both pretty well

End of Over No.18 Sri Lanka 133/8 Last Over (9 runs)

17.6 4 Shamsi to Malinga that’s completely through him. tossed up outside off, and spinning back in, takes a feather of Malinga’s bat when he goes to prod at it, and misses stumps by a whisker to run to fine leg FOUR
17.5 0 Shamsi to Malinga given some air on leg stump, he defends off the front foot with his pad in front of his bat no run

PRP: “Duminy has overs remaining from Morris and Steyn and he goes for Shamsi. Wow! It’s not a surprise that he is not trusted for any permanent leadership role.”

17.4 W Shamsi to Dananjaya dragged it on Shamsi had tossed this up well outside off and Akila unwisely attempts to go for glory himself, with a big booming drive. Ends up getting an inside edge onto the stumps. Would have been better off looking to push or nudge it for a single to get Udana back on strike OUT
A Dananjaya b Shamsi 1 (21m 2b 0x4 0x6) SR: 50.00
17.3 1 Shamsi to Udana moves way across the line and paddles it in the air to square leg. Duminy runs after it from fine leg but can’t get there, collects on the bounce 1 run
17.2 0 Shamsi to Udana fuller but in the same reverse-sweeping slot. He goes for it again, but misses this time. no run
17.1 4 Shamsi to Udana whoa, reverse sweep for four angled across him, and he spots it early. Premeditated the reverse and connected well to send it to the square leg fence FOUR

57 needed off 18

End of Over No.17 Sri Lanka 124/7 Last Over (15 runs)

16.6 1 Sipamla to Udana he’s broken his bat whew, Udana is whacking them so hard, the end of his bat has broken off! He’s looking pretty unhappy about it. That was back of a length on the stumps, he backed away again and got it off the toe-end, it went up in the air, but landed safely behind mid-off. But the bat’s going to have to be changed, though Udana has ensured he’s still on strike 1 run
16.5 0 Sipamla to Udana good comeback, quicker short ball outside off and Udana’s ploy of moving away and hacking at the ball doesn’t work with the quicker one, he doesn’t connect no run
16.4 6 Sipamla to Udana that’s leathered And he’s brought up his fifty too, his first in T20Is. What a way to bring it up. That ball made a pinging sound when it left his bat. Full on the stumps, he moved his front leg out of the way and swung for the heavens, connected in a heavenly manner too, sending it way over the ropes at deep square leg SIX
16.3 4 Sipamla to Udana moves across and gets this past short third man with a hoick. It was a thick inside edge but he had picked his spot and his shot – he knew Sipamla was going wide of off, so he countered that FOUR
16.2 4 Sipamla to Udana misses his line that time, went for the wide one outside off again, but couldn’t target the tramline. That meant Udana could free his arms and smash it through cover FOUR
16.1 0 Sipamla to Udana wide outside off, but within the tram lines. He wants to swing at it, but doesn’t connect. Kept it out of the batsman’s reach but just within the line no run

Mayurdan Gadhav: “No game is dead rubber as long as mighty Udana is there!” – still a talk ask at 72 needed off 24 balls

End of Over No.16 Sri Lanka 109/7 Last Over (18 runs)

15.6 1 Duminy to Udana sloppy by South Africa. This was pushed to point who had a needless shy at the stumps. There was no run there, but an overthrow conceded to keep Udana on strike 1 run
15.5 0 Duminy to Udana full toss on the pads and he wanted to swipe it too hard, ends up edging onto pad and then to short fine leg. He’s not happy with himself. That should have been another boundary no run
15.4 6 Duminy to Udana free hit disappears over long-on that’s a poor ball to bowl, never mind when it’s a free hit. Wide outside off, too short. Udana can free his arms and smash it across the line sending it way over long-on SIX
15.4 1 Duminy to Udana caught by Markram at the long-on boundary he leathered that, but didn’t get height on it. Down the track and cross-batted swat. Flew hard and straight, Markram didn’t have to move. Oh wait a minute, wait a minute. Duminy has over-stepped! So that’s a no-ball. And a free hit coming up! 1 no ball
15.3 4 Duminy to Udana thick edge goes for four through the slip area. there is no catcher there, he moved away and slashed it hard, gets a thick edge that runs away fine FOUR
