Ball by Ball Live Score Commentary

That’s that from Jaipur for tonight. We’re back on Tuesday as Chennai Super Kings take on Sunrisers Hyderabad in what could be a critical match for both teams in Chennai. Top spot on the points table beckons for Chennai, while Sunrisers can catch up with Mumbai Indians on 12 points. Should be a great game. Join us for that on ESPNcricinfo…for the moment, this is Debayan Sen signing off on behalf of Ankur Dhawan, Thilak Gowda and the rest of the crew here

Shiva Jayaraman from the ESPNcricinfo stats team has this gem, “the average hundred batting first has come in 54 balls in the IPL. Out of the 19 hundreds that have taken 54 or more balls, only 10 have come in wins. Out of the 23 hundreds that have taken 53 or fewer balls, 20 have come in wins”

Nagaraja: “Delhis’ result seems to be proving the importance of role of coach. Ricky Ponting seems to carry winning energies which ensured MI win the title when Ricky was the coach and he is proving it now with DC!!”

Yash: “Just had a look at the cricinfo IPL rankings. Moeen at No. 1 makes perfect sense but I’m a little surprised to not find Joffra Archer in the top 10. He’s been one of the best death overs bowler this season. ” — It’s a completely subjective list, Yash. I watch as many games as possible, and then have a really hard time zeroing in on the final 10, believe me!

Rishabh Pant is the player of the match, tells Murali Kartik at the presentation: “Feels really good to make your team win a crucial match. (selection of World Cup) I won’t lie that the thought wasn’t running through my mind, but I just focus on my process and that’s all I was thinking of. The wicket was playing good, and I just took advantage of that, I guess. (The thinktank) Most important thing for our team is that everyone knows our role, and the support staff tells us, ‘this is your role, and this is what is going to happen to you.'”

Shreyas Iyer: “(Away from home) When we play away from home, the wickets are so good. We enjoy playing on the rise, and the wickets are perfectly made for them. It was important to get a good start in the Powerplay, and Shikhar has been doing that well. The way we’ve been playing away games and coming back to our home games, we are unaware of how our pitch plays itself. We are happy the way currently our team is going. Let’s not give reasons when we play at home. We knew they were going to go all out, especially the way Ajinkya was batting. This is a big ground, and the pitch was a belter. The way they started, we were expecting 200, but the bowlers did well to restrict them to 190. (The major shift) Ricky (Ponting) just says that each batsman who starts must keep going. In the top 4, we have had Rishabh, myself and Shikhar doing that role. Today, Sharfane played a good cameo and took us closer to the win.”

SK: “MSK: Shankar is a 3-Dimensional player, Pant: Hold my Beer..” — Today’s performance was 4D at times!

Chan: “Delhi finished top of the table in 2012. Sehwag and Morne Morkel were excellent in that season. 11-12 wins if I’m not wrong. ” — Yes, went as favourites into the playoffs, and then gambled by including Pawan Negi in a qualifier, if I remember correctly

Raj: “RR only got 8/over last 7 overs. Rahane 23 of 16 balls and Rest 31 of 26 balls. Game Changer.” — Yes, at 12 overs, they were 122 for 1, and when they reflect, they will believe they should have kicked on to atleast about 215-220. That said, Delhi managed the chase perfectly too, and it was a very good batting wicket

Lovenya: “Comeon update the points table quickly I wanna see it and take a screenshot to capture this rare moment and cherish for quite some time ” — Here you go

Shikhar Dhawan: “I’ve become vegetarian, and the past few matches, I have changed my mindset and the way I play. Giving the team a good start has been good for me. (This season) I wouldn’t say last two games, maybe more 4-5 games. I just believe that I have to play more aggressive. We were losing early wickets, and I was trying to give partnerships. I am enjoying attacking the bowlers, and loving it.”

Steven Smith tells the broadcasters: “We probably didn’t finish off with the bat as well as we could have. I thought Morris and Rabada executed well in the backend. This was the best wicket we have played on all tournament. Shikhar played a magnificent knock, and Rishabh is a powerful young man, and he plays the ball in strange spots. (On dew) We probably changed a few tactics. Didn’t want to bowl Shreyas in the Powerplay, but I also didn’t want him to bowl at the backend. It’s a really good cricket wicket, and a really good game of cricket. (Idea behind not using Jofra Archer early) He can go either way. You can try and get wickets with your best bowler up front, or you can hold back like Delhi did with Rabada. We could have tried that option, but we chose to have him for the backend.”

11.37pm Delhi win the first meeting this season against Rajasthan Royals, and Ajinkya Rahane’s cracking century goes in vain. Shikhar Dhawan provided the early impetus, but when he fell to Shreyas Gopal, Rajasthan would have seen an opening. That little gap in the door was slammed firmly shut by Rishabh Pant, with a buccaneering 78 off just 36 balls

19.2 6 Unadkat to Pant short, and he has gone towards midwicket, and sealed the match for Delhi Capitals! It seems the ball has hit the boundary skirting on the full, and that should be the win. This was dug in short by Unadkat, and Pant held back and then whacked it with all the power at his disposal. What a good knock this has been from him. Mixed caution with some innovation, and took his chances when they presented themselves SIX

Hafiz: “After winning this game, DC will be in 1st place in the point table. Is it happening in first time in IPL history? WOW for DC!!”

19.1 1 Unadkat to Ingram slower ball, and he cuts this away towards third man. Gets the outer edge 1 run

Unadkat

Lakshman Kumar: “Time for the customary Delhi collapse to begin..!! ”

Six off six now

End of Over No.19 Delhi Daredevils 186/4 Last Over (11 runs)

SK: “That looked like a tactical misfield to keep Pant off strike .. ”

18.6 6 Archer to Pant length, and he has walloped this over long on. What a shot, and what a time to pull this off! SIX

Big ball coming up…

18.5 1 Archer to Ingram full ball, and he can only push this towards mid off and picks up a single 1 run
18.4 3 Archer to Pant short, and he has gone for the swat towards the on side. They will pick up three off this! It goes high in the air, lands near square leg, and then turns backwards, and neither Stuart Binny nor Ben Stokes can do enough to get a hold of it. Some dew playing a part too 3 runs

Mahesh Balaji: “I don’t remember a cover drive, a square cut or anything even being attempted on the off side from Pant. His bandwagon says 90% runs scored on the leg side. It’s surprising that bowlers haven’t found him out yet.” — He has actually played a lot of balls from outside off to the leg side. It’s been a pretty entertaining, innovative innings

18.3 1 Archer to Ingram full ball and he plays this towards point 1 run

RJ: “I just do not figure out why Dhawal Kulkarni plays every IPL season.. He has just not done ANYTHING in ANY Season.. Bizzare”

18.2 . Archer to Ingram full ball, and he hammers this back to Archer, who cannot quite stop it. Ingram comes down the wicket, but makes it back as Smith at mid off can’t pick it up clean no run
18.1 . Archer to Ingram length, fast, outside off, and he looks to swing this through covers, and misses no run

Ingram comes in, and now will have to face Archer

Dev: “What about a left hand right hand combination now. DC didn’t care unlike RCB”

End of Over No.18 Delhi Daredevils 175/4 Last Over (13 runs)

That was still a good over for Delhi – 13 off that over, and Rutherford undone by a slower ball, but he has just edged them that bit closer

17.6 W Kulkarni to Rutherford short, and he has looked to slice this towards long off, but it goes straight up, and Riyan takes the catch! OUT
SE Rutherford c Parag b Kulkarni 11 (9m 5b 1×4 1×6) SR: 220.00

Mr Babel: “@Vignesh: I’m sure cricinfo considered adding live chat system, but for that too they’d a few moderators to filter the comments. And that means we’re back to the current situation. ;)”

17.5 4 Kulkarni to Rutherford length, and he has biffed this through covers. Very well connected by Rutherford! FOUR

Avi: “I m watching DC’s game despite my engineering board exam.hope DC wins ” —- Which one has more riding on it?

17.4 1 Kulkarni to Pant short, outside off, and he smacks this towards extra cover 1 run

Navjot S Bhatia: “Similarity between the Bails and Ashton Turner this season..?? Both refuse to “Get Off the Mark”…!!”

17.3 1 Kulkarni to Rutherford full and wide, and he tries to cut this away but gets it off the toe-end. They pick up one, though 1 run

Srinath Sripath reminds me, “If Delhi win, three out of four unbeaten hundreds in IPL 2019 would have resulted in losses – Samson, Rahul and Rahane”. Gaurav Sundararaman adds that Chris Gayle also got 99 not out in a losing cause

17.2 6 Kulkarni to Rutherford length, and he has picked this up from outside off and sent it over deep midwicket. Just clears the fielder there, but across the ropes SIX

saurabh diwan: “Spoiler : RR fans crying in 20 minutes”

17.1 1 Kulkarni to Pant full ball, and he flicks this from outside off towards deep midwicket. Can only go through for one here 1 run

John A Raju: “@Chandan: I remember commentators saying that the zing bails are heavier. The normal bails are wooden and are like 15g and the zing bails are around 300g if I’m not wrong”

Kulkarni returns

Rajasthan were 165 for 4 at this stage

End of Over No.17 Delhi Daredevils 162/3 Last Over (11 runs)

16.6 . Gopal to Rutherford full ball, the wrong ‘un, and it squares Rutherford up. Goes off the pads towards short third man no run

David : “Cue the Delhi collapse”

16.5 1 Gopal to Pant short, and away from Pant, who somehow slaps it with one hand off the handle towards deep midwicket 1 run

Rutherford walks in

16.4 W Gopal to Shaw tossed up, and he has played this towards long on, and holed out! Bad shot selection from Shaw here. Delhi were cruising, and Pant was the one who was dominating the bowlers, but he went for the glory shot, and only found Riyan. Smart captaincy, in that he was a few yards within the long on boundary. Is there a twist in the tale here? OUT
PP Shaw c Parag b Gopal 42 (83m 39b 4×4 1×6) SR: 107.69

SK: “I dnt know if this season has the most dropped catches , but i would like to knw if this season has most instances of ball hitting stumps but bails not falling !! Happened twice with archer itself ..!!”

16.3 . Gopal to Shaw length, turns away, as Shaw attempts a slog sweep, but misses no run
16.2 1 Gopal to Pant Pant backs away to the leg side, Gopal fires it wider, and he plays this off the inside edge towards short fine leg 1 run

Chandan J: “Anyone thinks that the bails are heavier due to the light effects?”

16.1 4 Gopal to Pant full ball, and he has just rifled this down the ground past long on. What a shot! FOUR

FREE HIT!

16.1 (no Gopal to Pant full toss, on leg stump, and might be called a no ball for height, and he muscles it away towards long leg (no ball) FOUR

Hi Navjot, here’s your answer

End of Over No.16 Delhi Daredevils 151/2 Last Over (9 runs)

15.6 . Archer to Shaw that’s hit the bail, but the bail hasn’t fallen! It’s a full, fast ball, and Shaw was backing away to hit this through covers. It hits the top of leg stump, and stumps light up, but the bail doesn’t fall. Incredible! no run

Navjot S Bhatia: “Do you keep a track of the number of catches dropped in a match/season. Even if you dont .. can we still safely say that this season has been the worst so far considering the number of catches going down..!!” — Interesting one for the stats team

15.5 1 Archer to Pant full ball, and he taps this towards short cover and goes through for a single 1 run

Srinivasan: “RR using Binny exactly like RCB, Give the first over to Binny and then forget about him irrespective of however good or bad he bowls. No wonder why both these teams are at the bottom of the table. ”

Kulveer singh: “Delhi will win this ipl…my gut feeling……a tribute to the next gen…….”

15.4 6 Archer to Pant full ball, and he has flicked this towards long leg for six. Terrific shot, and brings up a swift fifty for Pant! SIX
15.3 1 Archer to Shaw full ball outside off, and he guides this towards backward point 1 run
15.2 . Archer to Shaw moves away and tries to drive a slower ball pitched outside off. Goes straight to Smith at cover no run

Win probability at the start of this over was 56 percent for Delhi Capitals

15.1 1 Archer to Pant full ball, on middle stump and he flicks this away towards deep midwicket. Gets a single as substitute Prashant Chopra is quick to get to it 1 run

Here’s Archer

50 off 30 balls. Quite evenly matched, I’d say. On a good surface, Delhi would fancy their chances, but 12 of those balls will be from Jofra Archer

End of Over No.15 Delhi Daredevils 142/2 Last Over (10 runs)

Supradeep: “I see a lot of. Comments implying that the rest of the match is a formality and DC are gonna walk the park. They are just a wicket away from a collapse and that is just around the corner.”

14.6 1 Unadkat to Pant slower ball, and he flicks this away towards deep midwicket 1 run

J: “Pant is more of lay down and deliver batsman instead of stand and deliver.”

14.5 1 Unadkat to Shaw length, outside off, and he slogs this down towards long off 1 run

Vignesh: “How about introducing a live chat system in cricinfo ?? So that everyone could see each other’s comments .. sometimes it’s frustrating when u type in long paragraphs , only to go unpublished … ” — We try our best to include as many as possible

14.4 1 Unadkat to Pant short ball, and he gets a top edge off a hook, but fine leg has now moved back to the boundary. It goes down to him after a few bounces 1 run

Varun Gupta: “RR while batting first 56 runs in last 7 overs. Reason, no power hitter in team. RR while bowling 81 runs in first 10, 51 in 4 overs since. Reason no medium pace bowler who can bowl cutters in middle overs. While fielding they drop too many catches. 3 reasons for them failing this season!”
