Ball by Ball Live Score Commentary

6.20pm Right, that’s the end of the fun for tonight. A rowdy start to England’s home international campaign. And what a campaign it will be. From myself, Alan and Thilak, good night!

6.14pm Farhan: “Mark my prediction – Eng will win the ODI 4-1. Pak will win both the warm up matches. Also they will exit from the round league. I can see it” Hmm … words marked

Joe Root is chuffed to have played his part in England’s win too … he really, really, really wants to re-establish himself as a T20 player.

“It’s quite difficult because of the lack of T20 cricket I’ve played in the last couple of years but, ultimately, it’s about trying to fit your role and playing in your own way in this team. I feel I generally do complement the guys pretty well, but obviously we’re always looking to find ways of scoring more quickly, I feel I can play that role which guards the team so that they can go out and play their shots.”

6.03pm Here’s Sarfraz: “We didn’t take wickets in the middle overs, and their captain played really well. Shadab, we miss him in the playing XI, but hopefully he’ll be well for the World Cup. We play five quality ODI matches before the World Cup, which is good preparation.”

Morgan: “Getting over the line with a young team is important for them to learn. Great practice going into the World Cup as well, two completely different challenges in three days. We were a bit hit-and-miss, it wasn’t near our best, Pakistan looked like getting 190, Jofra had a good debut, Tom Curran bowled well, but we’ll assess and learn, and move on.”

“The partnership between Vince and Root, they played beautifully, but when I came in, I felt I needed to throw a punch.”

6.02pm Rizwan Zafar: “Morgan has crafted the chase in a perfect fashion, hitting a boundary in every over and was always in control of the RRR.” Can’t argue with that. His form for Middlesex this season has been indifferent, but he’s turned it back on in England colours.

6pm Sealed with a six, on the dot of six. After the struggles in Malahide on Friday, that was a very impressive chase from England, a couple of important knocks from the old stagers, Morgan and Root, but it was a new-look team that sealed the deal.

19.2 6 Faheem Ashraf to Morgan sealed with a six! Spanked high over long-off! And Morgan is seriously pumped about that win, toppling the No.1 T20 team in the world is no mean feat, and he’s done it in style! SIX
19.1 2 Faheem Ashraf to Morgan a hint of width, nailed out to the sweeper in the covers, Morgan’s back for the second to bring up his fifty. Job almost done 2 runs

End of Over No.19 England 167/3 Last Over (10 runs)

18.6 . Shaheen Shah Afridi to Denly crashed to cover, Denly wanted the single but Morgan sends him back! Safe in the end, Morgan wanted the strike for the final over no run

James De Lamber: “Can we just give Foakes MoM for his glovework? ” Vince’s cover drive will have something to say about that

18.5 1 Shaheen Shah Afridi to Morgan full toss, smacked to long-on 1 run
18.4 1 Shaheen Shah Afridi to Denly full once more, flogged through the leg side again to keep the requirement draining away 1 run
18.3 1 Shaheen Shah Afridi to Morgan very full, tailing in, stabbed out to the off side 1 run
18.2 1 Shaheen Shah Afridi to Denly yorker again, Pakistan have bowled them well, stabbed to the leg side 1 run
18.1 6 Shaheen Shah Afridi to Denly in the slot, on the toes, and Denly launches this one flat over wide long-on! Superb contact, and it’s down to a run a ball now SIX

End of Over No.18 England 157/3 Last Over (12 runs)

17.6 1 Hasan Ali to Denly wafted across the line, Denly keeps the strike. England are in command 1 run
17.5 4 Hasan Ali to Denly an insolent swipe, and an under-edge through fine leg! FOUR

Vinay: “How dare Morgan take away Foakes’ shot at the debut MoM treble…” How rude! Maybe it’ll still count when he actually bats for the first time in a T20I. In about six years’ time

17.4 1 Hasan Ali to Morgan round the wicket, cramping for room, eased to the leg side 1 run
17.3 1 Hasan Ali to Denly back of a length, a slower ball, Denly dabs to cover and a quick single 1 run
17.2 1 Hasan Ali to Morgan boshed out to cover 1 run
17.1 4 Hasan Ali to Morgan full toss, a slap over the head of mid-off! Morgan got that one very high on the bat, but got enough on the shot to inflict the damage FOUR

End of Over No.17 England 145/3 Last Over (8 runs)

16.6 4 Shaheen Shah Afridi to Denly low full toss, but this time Denly’s drive pierces the field! Deeper in the crease this time, giving himself leverage, and filleting a vital boundary FOUR
16.5 . Shaheen Shah Afridi to Denly very full, outswinging yorker, this is quality containment. Can’t do much with that no run
16.4 . Shaheen Shah Afridi to Denly right up to the toes, flicked to midwicket, a fumble, thoughts of a single, the throw goes wide, a lot of drama for not a lot no run
16.3 1 Shaheen Shah Afridi to Morgan flogged to deep point, another single 1 run
16.3 1 Shaheen Shah Afridi to Morgan short, too short, launching high over the batsman’s head 1 wide
16.2 1 Shaheen Shah Afridi to Denly good scampering from Denly, beating the shy from mid-off 1 run
16.1 1 Shaheen Shah Afridi to Morgan tight line, attacking the top of off, dabbed to third man 1 run

End of Over No.16 England 137/3 Last Over (15 runs)

15.6 1 Hasan Ali to Morgan hauled out to backward square leg. England keeping themselves in touch now 1 run
15.5 4 Hasan Ali to Morgan banged in short, pulled with intent behind square, and Haris makes an utter mess of that one, attempting to scoop in one hand, he instead fell over his own feet, and pulled down his own pants as the ball rolled into the rope! FOUR
15.4 1 Hasan Ali to Denly chipped on the up, but short of long-on 1 run

Shazy: “Martin Speight is currently the head of both hockey, and cricket at Sedbergh School, a private boarding school in Cumbria. He hosts an annual ‘Martin Speight Cricket academy’, during the summer. He is also a commentator for BBC radio Newcastle for selected Durham fixtures.” Well, there you go. Mystery solved. Ta!

15.3 W Hasan Ali to Root scooped straight to Sarfraz! Looking to get the elevation over the keeper’s head, but was suckered by the cutter, and feathered a thin edge to the keeper. A decent knock, but a timely breakthrough! OUT
JE Root c †Sarfaraz Ahmed b Hasan Ali 47 (42b 5×4 0x6) SR: 111.90
15.2 1 Hasan Ali to Morgan very well bowled in the circumstances, another yorker, thumped on the up to long-on 1 run
15.2 (no Hasan Ali to Morgan hoisted out to deep midwicket! Lovely pick-up from outside off, and it’s utterly clobbered that over the leg side boundary. It’s an over-step too, so a free hit coming up… (no ball) SIX
15.1 1 Hasan Ali to Root tailing in once more, deflected behind square 1 run

End of Over No.15 England 122/2 Last Over (9 runs)

14.6 1 Faheem Ashraf to Root very full, Pakistan are nailing their yorkers right now, and England aren’t quite getting the rate they need, but they are keeping in touch 1 run

dr Shahid: “i think Pakistan should have picked wrist spinner for the game” Shadab alas is unwell, he’s a valuable asset in this format

14.5 1 Faheem Ashraf to Morgan flicked off the hip to midwicket again 1 run
