Ball by Ball Live Score Commentary

End of Over No.50 Pakistan 361/7 Last Over (6 runs)

7.40pm: Okay, it’s been a blast, the sort of bass-heavy, 100 overs of carnage that we’ve come to expect from England ODIs. Valkerie’s report should be your next port of call, to work out just where that game turned, and we’ll be back for more with the third ODI on Tuesday. Until then, thanks for your comments, and stay classy. Bye!

7.30pm: Right, presentations time… Starting with Pakistan captain, Sarfaraz Ahmed: “I think it’s hard to take, we were very close. I’m very proud of the team the way they batted, Fakhar Zaman, Babar, Asif Ali especially, will be good for the upcoming matches. Whatever the target is, we have to work hard, give credit to my batsmen, I’m very proud. T20 helps, when you need nine or ten, you know how to play these type of matches. Credit goes to Jos Buttler as well, the way he batted. Last ten over, our execution was not up to the mark, England bowled well, with their yorkers. We will aim to get better. We can take positives, like Fakhar, before the World Cup, definitely.

England captain Eoin Morgan: “We still believed, 370 is a tough score to chase down. Fakhar surprised us with how well he played, he had a day out. We need to work on some of our skills. But to post that score and defend it, it very pleasing. It was a belting wicket, with a short side and a wind blowing in. We drew a bit from playing in the Windies earlier this year. The wicket held up a bit from short of a length, we tried to take advantage of that. It was a day for the batters today, the bowlers fought a tough battle and we did well to get over the line. They delivered. We continued to take wickets, even when Pakistan dominated, the pressure was on the bowlers but they delivered and that was a good sign. [Buttler?] He’s very good. I was in prime position today to see the whole innings and his freakish knocks seems to be getting closer and closer together, which a great sign for us going forwards. [Position?] He times his run really well, however long he has in. It’s always open for discussion and today he was the difference.”

Jos Buttler is Man of the Match for his 50-ball hundred: “Yeah, very special, great to have [his new daughter] here and delighted to play that way back in an England shirt. Fantastic game of cricket and delighted to come out the right side to start the summer. [Hitting at the end?] We’ve seen cricket develop a lot, everyone tries to expand their range, it’s a huge part of the game trying to extend that last 15 overs. Start by building the partnership, guys set a platform and we bat deep so it allows us to try and push on. Just about trying to get as many as you can as fast as you can.”

7.20pm: So near, so far. We’ve seen a grand total of 734 runs scored at the Ageas Bowl, but the scales in the end tipped England’s way, as Pakistan could not find an imitation Jos Buttler-style stimulant at the death. Buttler was pretty much the difference, hitting as many sixes as Pakistan did combined, as England splurged 74 off their last five overs to take this game ultimately out of reach. Still, not many gave Pakistan an icicle’s chance in Hell at halfway, so the spirited way in which they took this to the last few balls is a positive for their chances over the coming weeks. Fakhar Zaman was like a stately wrecking ball, picking off boundaries in between much scampering, Asif Ali showed the man in green how to light the blue touchpaper, and Sarfaraz kept on battling to the end. But while no one could die down Buttler at the death, David Willey, Liam Plunkett and Chris Woakes (just about) held their nerve with the ball for England.

49.6 1 Woakes to Hasan Ali full and straight, dug out through mid-on – and that seals England’s victory by 12 runs! Phew 1 run

Drum roll…

49.5 . Woakes to Hasan Ali pitched up, right on the inside tramline, Hasan nowhere near it, he pleads for the wide… Nothing doing no run

14 from 2 (unless Woakes donates extras)

49.4 1 Woakes to Sarfaraz Ahmed pitched up and chipped over cover to the sweeper, just a single and Sarfaraz looks like he knows this has gone 1 run
49.3 . Woakes to Sarfaraz Ahmed another wide full-bunger from Woakes, the batsman wasn’t sure whether hang back for a straight one, fails to connect no run

15 from 4 now

49.2 1 Woakes to Hasan Ali full, 84mph and squeezed off the toe, Moeen topples over at short third man to prevent four! 1 run
49.2 1 Woakes to Hasan Ali early shuffle from Hasan, wide of the tramline from Woakes… he doesn’t like it but the umpire signals wide 1 wide

Nick: “Wow, that’s 1388 runs today combining Ireland vs WI & Eng vs Pak ! Can Pakistan make it 1407 runs and win this contest?” Well, they need 17 more…

49.1 2 Woakes to Hasan Ali full and wide, Hasan woofs it up and over cover, they trundle back for two 2 runs

Chris Woakes is the man to bowl it, Hasan on strike

“I wonder if Stokes will get the last over…?” titters James De Lamber. Nope. Morgan’s not playing

End of Over No.49 Pakistan 355/7 Last Over (8 runs)

“Is this Pakistan Highest Score while chasing?” It is that, Qaiser Abbas. And they still have a puncher’s chance at the last…

48.6 2 Plunkett to Sarfaraz Ahmed back of a length, Sarfaraz slaps it on the up, juuuusssst clears mid-off and extra cover running back and they run a couple 2 runs

Out strides Hasan Ali, Pakistan need 21 off seven

48.5 W Plunkett to Faheem Ashraf full outside off, spooned up and taken at mid-off! Plunkett gets another, the pressure rising and Pakistan look like the ones who are going to crack OUT
Faheem Ashraf c Stokes b Plunkett 3 (8m 4b 0x4 0x6) SR: 75.00
48.4 1 Plunkett to Sarfaraz Ahmed back of a length, Sarfaraz pulls but that’s just one to deep square leg 1 run

“Don’t expect any T20 cameo from Pakistan,” moops Masroor. “They have won their T20’s bcoz of bowling and not batting.”

48.3 1 Plunkett to Faheem Ashraf short ball at the body, helped away to deep backward square and Willey gives chase 1 run
48.2 3 Plunkett to Sarfaraz Ahmed dug in short and Sarfaraz top-edges into the leg side… somehow it lands between two men! Faheem hurtles back for a third 3 runs

“Willey’s 50th ODI wicket there!” Well noted, Joel H

48.1 1 Plunkett to Faheem Ashraf full, wide and chopped into the ground and they pinch one 1 run

Can Pakistan bounce back again? They need more than two a ball. Liam Plunkett returns

End of Over No.48 Pakistan 347/6 Last Over (5 runs)

Top stuff from Willey at the end, 2 for 17 from three overs. And he’s kept Sarfaraz off strike, too

47.6 . Willey to Sarfaraz Ahmed right on the line, very full outside off, does the job as Sarfaraz flails in vain no run
47.5 1 Willey to Faheem Ashraf short ball, coming back in as Faheem swipes up and under and down to third man for one 1 run

Akshaykamat: “After all hype around Rashid he gave away 81 run in his 10 over. Overhyped?” Well, I don’t know about that… but it didn’t really go his way today

47.4 1 Willey to Sarfaraz Ahmed another wide yorker, big swing but he can only plink it towards mid-off 1 run

Faheem Ashraf walks out, the the game still in the balance. Sarfaraz on strike

47.3 W Willey to Imad Wasim short ball, hacked into the air… Buttler takes it running back towards fine leg! Imad was cramped him for room, the ball went high but pretty much into no-man’s land, meaning Buttler had to get his skates on. Taken sprawling forwards, Pakistan six down now! OUT
Imad Wasim c †Buttler b Willey 8 (10m 4b 0x4 1×6) SR: 200.00
47.2 1 Willey to Sarfaraz Ahmed that’s basically a full toss but it’s so wide Sarfaraz can barely reach and one off the toe is the result 1 run
47.1 2 Willey to Sarfaraz Ahmed full and wide and slugged over the covers, they come back for two 2 runs

Thirty-two needed off the last three… In T20, this would be very doable. How much gas do Pakistan have left?

End of Over No.47 Pakistan 342/5 Last Over (17 runs)

46.6 6 Rashid to Imad Wasim googly, in the slot, hoicked all the way over long-on! Imad frees the arms and pongos it into the crowd to keep Pakistan alive! SIX

“Prob more chance of winning when they are not expected too,” yelps Graham. “I’m with Pak now”

46.5 1 Rashid to Sarfaraz Ahmed tossed up on off, clubbed down the ground and it’s one to long-off 1 run
46.4 2 Rashid to Sarfaraz Ahmed tries to follow him backing away, heaved leg side and they again snaffle two 2 runs
46.3 2 Rashid to Sarfaraz Ahmed makes room again with the ball spinning away, carved behind point but YJB does superbly to prevent four with a sliding stop on the rope 2 runs
46.2 4 Rashid to Sarfaraz Ahmed googly, on off stump and Sarfaraz launches it over extra cover for four! Brilliantly placed FOUR
46.1 2 Rashid to Sarfaraz Ahmed floated up and clubbed down the ground, fine of long-off for a couple 2 runs

End of Over No.46 Pakistan 325/5 Last Over (4 runs)

Just four off the over from Willey, and Pakistan now need more than two runs per ball

45.6 . Willey to Imad Wasim steams in and bounces the new batsman, who swings hard but fails to connect no run

“That’s the game,” murmurs Bilal Mustafa

45.5 2 Willey to Imad Wasim over the wicket, short and clubbed towards mid-off… the throw from Plunkett is wild and they nick a second 2 runs

Out comes Imad Wasim… he can give it a tonk

45.4 W Willey to Asif Ali in the slot, Asif connects… and picks out long-off! Sliced it a touch, was looking to go straighter but it is right at Stokes, who seems to lose sight of it but holds on in front of his chest even as he stumbles back! Is that the game? OUT
Asif Ali c Stokes b Willey 51 (56m 36b 2×4 4×6) SR: 141.66
45.3 . Willey to Asif Ali full, 83mph and nibbling off the seam as Asif swings himself into a different dimension and then bellows in annoyance! no run
45.2 2 Willey to Asif Ali standing on off now, gets a drive ball away through mid-off for a couple more – that’s his fifty, second in ODIs for Asif 2 runs
