Ball by Ball Live Score Commentary

Thank you for joining us. Look forward to your company on Sunday for the second T20I. Same time, morning start in Florida. Night start in India. Hint of rain around, but we should be good to start. Hopefully a better wicket and more runs are in store? Well, I quite enjoyed this scrap and wouldn’t mind another one. Until then, this is Shashank Kishore signing out on behalf of Varun Shetty. Cheers

If you’re just tuning in, here’s Varun Shetty with the match bulletin. Has everything you need to know to get up to speed and prepare you for Super Sunday.

1.40pm Far from a walk in the park for India, but their batting depth has helped them prevail. On a sticky wicket, you always felt West Indies needed at least 130. The second half proved just that. None of the Indian batsmen managed to convert their start and bat through, but the good work by Navdeep Saini, Krunal Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja with the ball left them with fewer runs than they would’ve expected to chase. And just how did West Indies manage the amount of runs they did? Courtesy the experience of Kieron Pollard, the only batsman to dig in to make a formidable score. The presentation is coming up shortly. Don’t go away.

Virat Kohli: Bowling and fielding right up there, the pitch wasn’t great. With the rain around, you couldn’t do much, I guess. They did well to start the game on time. Bowlers were on top throughout, variations were superb. Navdeep is from Delhi, he’s come a long way. Plays the IPL as well, had a great season. Raw talent, hardly any bowlers who can bowl 150 clicks, hopefully he builds on from here. We would’ve liked to chase it four down, but we wanted to take risks and take the scoreboard moving. As the ball got older, strike rotation became key. It’s just about putting in solid performance, ensure the guys who play contribute in some way or the other.

Debutant Navdeep Saini is Man of the Match for his three-for.

Carlos Brathwaite: Once again don’t think we assessed conditions, kudos to Kieron coming back into the team. He showed his experience. Had we made 130, it would’ve been a different game. We batted ourselves out of the game. We have to play positively. The message will continue to be to keep intent, but we need to have better shot selection and awareness. Sunil’s four overs very important, he showed his experience, brought us back into the game. Great bowling effort.

Sunil Narine is being interviewed by the host broadcasters: “Always good to be back in maroon. Being able to perform for the country is a proud moment. Fitness is there, finger is now 100%. T20 I’m trying to stay on for as long as I can. Let’s see how it goes. We still have to play positively, start well in the Powerplay, whether we’re batting or bowling. We’ve to start winning matches. No new thing (innovation with the ball) at the moment, just enjoying my cricket. Hopefully you can see good performances in the near future.”

17.26 Paul to Washington Sundar walloped over long-on and India win! Fabulous strike from Washington in Florida! Short of length, angling in and he just slapped it cross-batted with an air of disdain. Held his shape briefly and then put it when he intended it to play. SIX
17.10 Paul to Washington Sundar attempted yorker that turns into a full toss, bunted to point no run

Keemo from around the stumps

End of Over No.17 India 92/6 Last Over (4 runs)

16.60 Brathwaite to Jadeja gets well forward and defends back towards the bowler no run
16.51 Brathwaite to Washington Sundar edged, races to third man who is fine 1 run
16.40 Brathwaite to Washington Sundar right into the blockhole, squeezed back no run
16.31 Brathwaite to Jadeja on the pads, flicked to deep square 1 run
16.21 Brathwaite to Washington Sundar slower and fuller on the stumps, gets a leading edge that rolls to point 1 run
16.11 Brathwaite to Jadeja slower length ball angling in, tucked to fine leg 1 run

End of Over No.16 India 88/6 Last Over (3 runs)

15.6W Paul to Pandya the off-stump is knocked back! It’s the late swing that has done the trick. Angles this in full from wide of the crease, Krunal is looking to work it through midwicket but then the ball wickedly moves away off the seam to square him up and hit the top of middle OUT
KH Pandya b Paul 12 (14b 1×4 0x6) SR: 85.71
15.50 Paul to Pandya can’t get much bat on this pull, rolls to short fine leg no run
15.41 Paul to Jadeja full toss, he reaches out to squeeze this to third man 1 run

Deenadhayal Sub: “In 2016, the opening game saw 200 runs in each innings and 3 years later, both teams cant make it to 200 collectively. Has this pitch changed completely? ”

15.30 Paul to Jadeja controls this pull to midwicket no run
15.21 Paul to Pandya drives this full ball to deep cover 1 run
15.11 Paul to Jadeja eased to long-off 1 run

End of Over No.15 India 85/5 Last Over (12 runs)

14.60 Thomas to Pandya nearly dragged on! Was aware this was about to roll back and quickly tried to get his bat to block the path of the ball. Luckily the ball stopped as it spun around for a bit. Went for a big booming drive, cramped for room, length a touch too full too. no run
14.54 Thomas to Pandya pulled imperiously this time, he’s clobbered this or what? Acres of open space at seep square. This sat up nicely, not much pace this time from Oshane. For all that effort, the output was far from desired and Krunal was ready to take full toll FOUR
14.41 Thomas to Jadeja eased with the angle to fine leg 1 run
14.33 Thomas to Pandya picks the length early and hammers this pull in front of square, clears Hetmyer at midwicket. Skipper Brathwaite runs across all the way from mid-on to pull it back at deep midwicket. Slow outfield because of the rain we had in the build-up to the game 3 runs
14.23 Thomas to Jadeja driven firmly into the gap at deep cover, misfield too from Ewin Lewis. Clumsy. What should’ve been two is now three 3 runs
14.11 Thomas to Pandya slashed down to third man off a thick outside edge 1 run

Oshane back into the attack. Can he nip out another wicket here?

End of Over No.14 India 73/5 Last Over (5 runs)

13.62 Cottrell to Jadeja ease wide of point, third man comes around to cut that off, excellent running 2 runs
13.61 Cottrell to Jadeja another full ball that is ill-directed, way down leg 1 wide

Pollard chirping about ‘more pressure’ on India. Deliberately tries to do it in front of the batsman’s face. Mind games. Hmmmm

13.61 Cottrell to Jadeja slips in a yorker-length delivery but down leg, wide called. Jadeja overbalanced as he tried to tickle it fine 1 wide
13.5W Cottrell to Kohli he’s top-edged the pull straight to midwicket. Is this an opening for the West Indies? Absolute lack of pace does Kohli in as he looks to pull from way outside off. Perhaps not the best shot but well, the surface can play tricks. The bowler rolled his fingers across the seam, gave Kohli absolutely no pace to work with. He’s bitterly disappointed with himself. Match on! OUT
V Kohli c Pollard b Cottrell 19 (29b 1×4 0x6) SR: 65.51
13.41 Cottrell to Pandya right into the blockhole, squeezes this wide of mid-on for a single 1 run
13.30 Cottrell to Pandya eases this length delivery into the off side no run

Saurabh tells me, three India teams in action. The Under-19 boys have sealed a one-wicket win over England U-19. A side too on the verge of victory as are Kohli’s men

13.20 Cottrell to Pandya nicely on top of the bounce as he turns this back towards the bowler no run
13.10 Cottrell to Pandya hops back to get on top of the bounce and defend no run

In Port-of-Spain, Abhimanyu Easwaran has just hit fifty as India A are cruising towards a tricky target in the second four-day game. Agarwal made 81, Panchal 58.

With ten nearly equally matched groups, the importance of every game can’t be understated in this tournament. Both sides are expected to emerge out packaged full-strength against each other in what claims to be a cracker of a competition. Contemplating that the 2 sides on newspaper,West Indies are somewhat more power-packed unit whereas India possess the benefit of being a steady side. For this and another above-mentioned motives, we believe the West Indies are far more likely to emerge victorious in what will be among the most crucial experiences for either side.
